The Lucky Pencil is a tribute to the original “Deco 34” model from the 1930s, which has now been reissued as a limited edition in sterling silver and gold vermeil – with the same striking square shape and characteristic pattern that once saved Lt. Leslie March’s life.
Lt. March, one of the first volunteers in WWII, received this Yard-O-Led pencil from his wife Margaret. While serving with the Cameron Highlanders, the pencil stopped a bullet in a life-threatening situation and from that moment on became Lt. March's personal good luck charm. The pencil accompanied him until the Normandy landings on D-Day +1, where he tragically lost his life the following day.
After his death, the pencil was kept by his family as a treasured heirloom until it was finally donated to the Yard-O-Led Museum by his stepbrother, Mr. Kelly, who still remembers Lt. March as his "hero."
For the new edition of the "Deco 34", all tools have been faithfully reproduced and the writing instrument is carefully handcrafted in Yard O Led's Birmingham workshop. The edition is limited to 734 pieces in sterling silver and 734 in gold vermeil - a commemoration of Lt. March's service number (190734).
Each of these unique 925 Sterling silver writing instruments comes with a lifetime guarantee and is available to pre-order with a limited edition leather pouch. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Royal Marines Charity in support of Marines and their families.
