Montblanc Meisterstück 149 Vintage L139 Fountain Pen

The Montblanc Meisterstück 149 has been one of the brand's defining large fountain pens since the early 1950s. This example is particularly interesting because it combines two features that attract considerably more attention among vintage Montblanc collectors than an ordinary later 149: a 14C 585 gold nib marked L139 G at the base and a split feed made of ebonite.

The L139 nib belongs to the line of the predecessor Montblanc Meisterstück 139. Collector documentation shows that gold nibs marked L139 were also used in very early 149 pens and are encountered far less often today than regular later 149 nibs. This example adds another special characteristic: the nib is lightly flexible. This gives it a softer, livelier feel on paper and allows subtle variation in line width under moderate pressure without being intended as a full flex nib.

The ebonite split feed is another characteristic vintage detail. Montblanc used this divided ebonite construction during a period before the later transition to plastic feeds. For collectors it is therefore not only functional but also a technically and historically interesting part of the 149's evolution. It should not be presented as inherently superior in performance to later plastic feeds. Its appeal lies instead in the traditional material and period construction.

The combination of the large 149 format, the unusual L139 G gold nib, its lightly flexible writing character and the ebonite split feed makes this fountain pen markedly more distinctive than an ordinary pre owned 149. Its collector appeal lies above all in these unusual vintage components and the individual writing feel. The components alone, however, do not prove that the pen originally left the factory in exactly this configuration.

The fountain pen is in pre owned, good to very good condition and has received a service to Montblanc standard. Original packaging is not included.
