The Maki-e artist has created an extraordinary work of art using the traditional Raden technique. For the M1000 Raden Black Infinity, selected parts of the Australian abalone shell are cut into rectangular shapes by hand and smoothed. First, the fountain pen is painted with black Urushi lacquer. The shell parts are then fixed to the fountain pen by applying a layer of lacquer to the cap and barrel. Several layers of lacquer are applied, each of which must dry and harden completely before the next layer is applied. Between the individual finishing steps, the lacquered surface of the fountain pen is polished several times. A subtle silver sheen can be seen on the black Urushi lacquer. This effect is achieved by sprinkling fine sterling silver dust. Finally, the artist signs and numbers each fountain pen individually using the highly valued Maki-e technique. The motif is reminiscent of a checkerboard pattern; it has no beginning and no end on the round body of the fountain pen, which is where the name Infinity comes from.
